Jane the salt woman

Started by: bentlegs (5310)

Just a bit of nostalgia an it's true, my mother told me years ago about Jane in the 30s and40s Jane came from Southport once a month to sell blocks of salt , she came to Simms road an Garswood with a pony and cart , now Jane would ride on the cart and in winter she would be crying so someone said to her why don't you walk it would keep you warmer, and Jane's reply was NO I WILL RIDE AND SKYKE

JUST SOMETHING THAT HIT ME BUT TRUE.

Before families had a domestic electric supply and could buy a fridge/freezer salt was used to preserve food this was either in vats of brine or just rubbed straight onto the meat/fish

JANES salt was used for general use the blocks were so big they would last a year, my Grandmother had us kids scraping the blocks to fill jars and sold to neighbours

Peter p you’re right. Lived in a 300 year old farmhouse in Croston and one of the rooms had stone shelves where meat was stored, placed and rub with salt. Over the years the salt had absorbed into the walls and when I moved there in the 80’s boy the problems.
